Course Description

Teaching asks for constant attention, and attention is exactly what a busy school day wears down. This course gives European teachers a practical toolkit of mindfulness strategies in two directions: for the classroom, so that pupils learn to focus, settle and manage their emotions, and for the teacher, so that the person in front of the class has a way to recover calm and energy during the school day and beyond it.

The course runs in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the Guadalquivir meets the Atlantic. Part of the programme takes place on the beach at the river mouth, facing Doñana National Park: an open, quiet setting where the practices are learned outdoors and then adapted to the school.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand what mindfulness is, what the evidence says and how it fits into teaching
  • Build a short personal practice that fits into a real school day
  • Lead simple mindfulness routines in class: arrivals, transitions, attention anchors, calm minutes
  • Help pupils recognise and regulate their emotions with age-appropriate techniques
  • Communicate mindfully with pupils and families: listening, responding instead of reacting
  • Design a mindfulness plan for your own classroom and for yourself

Who is it for?

Teachers of any stage, from early years to vocational education, and school leaders and counsellors. No previous experience of mindfulness or meditation is needed. The course is taught in English at a basic level (A2): clear, slow language, short instructions and plenty of demonstration. If you can follow simple conversation, you can follow this course.

Each participant presents their school or institution: context, students, ongoing projects and what they expect from the course. The starting point for the collaborations that emerge during the week.

2 Day 2 — What mindfulness is, and what it is not ▼
What mindfulness is, and what it is not
The basics without the jargon: attention, the present moment, the wandering mind. What research says about mindfulness in schools, and what it does not say. Where it fits, and where it does not, in everyday teaching.

The teacher's body: stress and the school day
Recognising the signals of stress in the body and the mind during a teaching day. Breath and body practices that take one to three minutes: before class, between lessons, after a difficult moment.

Building your own practice
Each participant starts a short personal practice that fits their real timetable. Guided practice, and the first entries of the practice bank you take home.

Manzanilla winery visit & tasting

Tuesday afternoon · 15,00 € approx.

Step into one of the historic bodegas of Sanlúcar, where the sea breeze and the flor yeast create manzanilla, the lightest of the sherry wines. A guided visit through the cellars followed by a tasting.

Boat trip to Doñana

Thursday afternoon · 20,00 € approx.

Sail from Bajo de Guía up the Guadalquivir to the edge of Doñana National Park, one of the great wetlands of Europe: pine woods, marshes and birds, seen from the water at sunset.

Cultural Day Trip — Cádiz or Seville

Saturday afternoon · 45,00 – 50,00 € approx. (transport included)

Choose between two jewels of Southern Spain: Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Western Europe — or Seville, the dazzling capital of Andalusia.
